Your Art Practice:
Be Still, Slow or Do Nothing At All
Your art practice is all about giving yourself permission to rest. In a society that often glorifies constant busyness, rest sometimes feels like a neglected luxury. This practice is designed to help you create gentle moments of rest and, hopefully, encourage you to redefine what rest means in your life. How to embrace this practice:
-
You don't need an extended period of time to rest. Start with just five minutes (or even one minute) and celebrate your commitment to doing absolutely nothing for this short duration.
-
Choose a comfortable spot to be still, whether it's a chair, a couch, your bed or the ground. Don't overthink it; simply stop where you are if that's the easiest option.
-
As you pause, your senses have a chance to catch up. Take in your surroundings—the colours, textures and light. Pay attention to the sounds, smells, and the simple act of observing your environment. Orient yourself by noticing what's above you, below you, and on either side.
-
Direct your awareness to the support beneath or behind you, whether it's the pressure of your body against a chair or the ground. Recognise how you're being gently held.
Why does this creative practice matter?
This practice is a vital reminder that rest is not a luxury but a necessity for our well-being. It encourages you to embrace moments of stillness and contemplation, cultivating a deeper connection with your inner self and the environment around you. In a world that often demands ceaseless activity, allowing yourself to be slow, still, or to do nothing at all becomes an act of self-compassion.
It supports you in reframing the concept of rest, emphasizing its significance in nurturing your mental and emotional equilibrium. By practising the art of rest, you can discover a profound sense of peace and self-acceptance. Remember that pausing is an art that requires practice, and it's a practice worth mastering. Enjoy tiny moments of quiet and rest whenever you can.
